If you found this hotel on Booking.com or in a Google search and are wondering where to reserve, you can book direct with De Gamlas Hem through its own online booking engine. This page explains what every stay includes, how the rooms differ, what is easier to arrange by dealing with the hotel itself, and how the booking works, step by step.
De Gamlas Hem is a hotel and restaurant in a protected wooden art nouveau villa completed in 1906, at Kirkkokatu 54 in the Heinäpää district near Oulu city centre. It has 22 rooms: 16 in the main house and 6 in a newer courtyard building.
Why book direct with De Gamlas Hem?

Booking sites are a convenient way to find and compare hotels, and every guest is equally welcome here whichever channel they used. The room, the breakfast and the service are the same. What changes is what sits around the booking and who you deal with.
When you book direct with De Gamlas Hem, you are in touch from the start with the people who will welcome you at the door. The hotel’s Hotellinx booking engine shows live availability for your dates. The Oulu Staycation package is presented on the hotel’s own website, meeting guests get 15 % off the accommodation day rate, and the house also offers gift cards for the hotel and restaurant. Requests such as connecting Queen+ rooms, a cot or the Suite are arranged directly with reception. And whichever channel you choose, breakfast, five o’clock tea and access to the Hukka saunas come with the room.
What every stay includes

Three things come with every room, whichever channel you booked through.
Breakfast
If you have not stayed in a Finnish hotel before, expect breakfast to be a proper meal rather than coffee and a pastry, usually laid out as a buffet. At De Gamlas Hem the breakfast buffet is served from 7.00 to 10.00 on weekdays and from 7.30 to 10.30 at weekends. Outside guests pay €17; for hotel guests it is included.
Five o’clock tea
This is a habit of this particular house: an hour in the late afternoon, Monday to Saturday from 17.00 to 18.00, when the day of sightseeing or meetings turns into evening among tiled stoves and exposed log walls. It costs €10.50 for visitors and is included for hotel guests. More on the five o’clock tea page.
Gym and saunas
Guests have access to Liikuntakeskus Hukka, a sports centre about 600 metres away in the same district, with a gym, group classes, a traditional sauna and an infrared sauna. Access is included for hotel guests; reception can tell you how it works. In Finland the sauna is less a spa treatment than an ordinary habit, and the steam that rises when water meets the hot stones even has its own word, löyly.
Choosing a room

The 16 rooms in the main house keep the building’s original, protected layout. The 6 rooms in the courtyard building have their own entrance on the parking side, which is handy if you arrive by car.
| Room type | Size | Bed | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single | 10 m² | 120 cm | – |
| Double | 12.5 m² | 140 cm | – |
| Queen | – | 160 cm | some rooms have wooden floors |
| Queen+ | 15.5–17.5 m² | 160 cm | connecting rooms available |
| Suite | 23 m² | 200 cm | mini fridge, kettle, tea and coffee |
Every room has a shower and WC, an LED TV, Wi-Fi, blackout curtains (useful during the bright northern summer nights), a desk and a hairdryer. You can borrow a bike, and there is a safe, ironing and snacks in the lobby. One honest note: the building is protected and dates from 1906, so step-free access is limited. If anyone in your party has mobility needs, contact reception before you book.

Packages and meeting rates
For a leisure stay, look at the Oulu Staycation package (page in Finnish). On top of the room and breakfast it adds a glass of sparkling wine on arrival, a locally handmade chocolate-tasting gift, five o’clock tea, 10 % off in the restaurant, and Hukka with its saunas. It costs €39 on top of the day rate for two people, in a Standard room or the Suite, and must be booked at least 24 hours ahead. It can be cancelled free of charge until 12.00 two days before arrival. To find out how to book the package, ask reception on +358 75 325 7600 or at info@degamlashotel.fi.
Coming to Oulu for work? With a meeting package (weekdays 8–16) you get 15 % off the accommodation day rate. The discount is agreed with the sales team when the meeting is booked: sales@degamlashotel.fi, +358 75 325 7605.
Special requests are easiest when you book direct with De Gamlas Hem

Some trips need more than a room type. Some of the Queen+ rooms connect, so a family or two friends can have separate rooms with a door between them. Cots are available on request. The Suite, at 23 m² with a 200 cm bed, is the natural choice for an anniversary or a longer stay.
All of these are arranged directly with reception. When you book direct with De Gamlas Hem, you settle the details with the same people who prepare your room: call +358 75 325 7600 or write to info@degamlashotel.fi. If you have already booked elsewhere, you are of course still welcome to contact reception.
Buying for someone else? A gift card (page in Finnish) can be any amount, is valid for six months and works in both the hotel and the restaurant. To check how it can be used towards a room booking, ask reception.
